Movies of GroEL double ring

These movies were generated from the PDB structures 1AON and 1DER. The input files were homogenized using custom Perl scripts, and all heteroatoms (including ATP/ADP) were discarded. GroES is only present in 1AON, and thus is not included in the morph. The structures have been superimposed using the 'fit' command in CNS, but aside from deleting atoms not present in both structures, few changes have been made from the crystal form. Adiabatic mapping created 28 intermediate structures and took several hours. Note that none of the movies here are at all representative of the actual biological function of GroEL! Something more realistic is being worked on as time and computing cycles permit.

All movies were created in Linux using PyMOL for rendering and SAMPEG for encoding.

The following movies are available, all in MPEG format (click on the thumbnail to open the file):
Sideways, stick figure (640x480) (also at 800x600)
From top, stick figure (640x480)
Sideways, cartoon ribbons (640x480)
Entire complex, GroES cycling on and off at both ends. I used structures 1gr5, 1gr6, and 1gru, which appear to be based on the original crystal structures, refitted to cryo-EM maps (see the Cell paper) by Helen Saibil's and Arthur Horwich's groups. I've filled in gaps using the crystal structures and CNS, and added in or replaced certain subunits (like the second GroES). I missed the timing entirely, and most of the function as well, but at least I can now work with a model of the entire chaperonin.

A complete set of PDB files for this morph can be downloaded here.
